More Than an Event

Every gathering is another chance to build relationships, create positive memories, and show young people what it looks like when a community keeps showing up.

Strong Arms over the years

Taye

One of our first guys to complete the program

Let me introduce you to Taye! Taye is a transplant from Houston TX and one of the guys from our very first group back in fall of 2021! Taye has done nothing but excel in life and we couldn’t be more proud!
According to Taye & his mother Strong Arms was the best thing to ever happen to him! Sykes became a safe place and a place where he could leave that “thug mentality” that Jackson almost requires outside. He quickly realized that this wasn’t punishment but rather a pleasant surprise! Benny & Terun always “kept it 1000” in Tayes words. By Benny & Terun being so forth coming about their own lives and the certain similarities it is what truly inspired a change in Taye!
We hope Sykes will continue to be a safe place not just for Taye but others like him in our community and may God continue to work through Benny and Terun as they continue on their mission of “Rebuilding the communities they once helped destroy.”

Lessons Beyond the Court

Not just a basketball goal

After a couple of great games and a few broken goals we have decided it's time to secure our new basketball goal. That means … we got to set it in concrete! And who better to do it than US? These young men put in a lot of hard work in this Mississippi heat (with a smile on their face might I add) and are getting way more than just a basketball goal!
Hard work teaches several important life lessons! Determination, attentiveness, responsibility, problem solving, and self-control all come to mind. These lessons in turn will help them in many other aspects of life that most may not realize.
A person may not always like how the work feels or what it looks like...but hard work ultimately builds and instills good character traits such as resilience, patience, discipline, and integrity.
Working hard gives you a sense of achievement, fulfillment, and self-satisfaction. Working hard helps a person stay positive and confident.   It also encourages perseverance and the ability to overcome obstacles.
